Robert A. Helsel, MD
Dr. Helsel came to UT Medical Center in 1988 after serving as a physician-surgeon with the U.S. Army Medical Corp for 20 years. He is a cardiothoracic surgeon with University Heart Surgeons.After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland at College Park, Dr. Helsel entered the University’s medical school at Baltimore, earning his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1969. He completed an internship at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, TX, and a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Brooke Army Medical Center, Ft. Sam Houston, TX.
Prior to joining the UT Medical Center faculty and medical staff, Dr. Helsel held clinical appointments at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, Texas and then University of Health Sciences, Bethesda, Maryland.
Dr. Helsel is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Chest Physicians and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgery.
