Our Physicians
At University Heart Surgeons we pledge to develop a continuing relationship between physician and patient. For us, that means providing the ultimate in cardiac and thoracic treatment, insuring you and your family’s satisfaction with the care we provide, and helping you return to a full, active life. Our physicians are skilled cardiothoracic surgeons and are trained in a subspecialty, assuring you advanced cardiac treatment. We perform a majority of trauma-related surgery for victims of major chest, heart and aortic injury. We are unique in the Knoxville area because of our association with the Chest Service at UT. Our location in a university-based medical center and faculty appointments with the UT Graduate School of Medicine offer our physicians access to the latest medical developments and research and the opportunity to advance both.
University Heart Surgeons provide surgical services for a wide range of heart, lung, esophageal and thoracic disorders in adults, children and infants. Surgical treatment of adult heart disease includes coronary artery bypass, heart valve repair or replacement, cardiac tumors, and a host of complex problems such as repair of torn and aneurismal aorta in the chest. Newer technologies such as off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting, transmyocardial laser revascularization, mitral valve repair, and mechanical ventricular assist support are offered.
UT Medical Center is the only area hospital to have artificial heart assist as a life-saving measure for those who have a heart too weak to sustain life either from a heart attack or following open-heart surgery. Transmyocardial revascularization (TMR) is available for selected patients with disabling angina who are no longer candidates for angioplasty or coronary artery bypass. Some patients have the option of coronary artery bypass off the heat-lung machine.
UHS physicians are diplomats of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and fellows of the American College of Surgeons. University Heart Surgeons also has four certified physician assistants in surgery and with patient care.
We are grateful for the individuals and families who place their care in our hands and welcome the opportunity to serve you.
